The fourteenth century was notable for the wars fought by a mighty conqueror: Tamerlane, whose actual name was Timur-i-Lenk (Timur the Lame. From his land south of Samarkand, he established an immense empire taking in many different peoples. This member of the Barlas turco-mongol clan was wounded in a battle probably in his twenties.
